Wen Zhisheng: Working Memory in Language Sciences and Bilingualism Research: Towards an Integrated Account and a Taxonomy

At 7:00 pm on May 24, 2021, Wen Zhisheng, a professor of School of Linguistics and Translation, Macao Polytechnic Institute, was invited by the School of Foreign Languages of Southeast University and the Asia-Pacific Language Policy Research Center to hold an online lecture on the theme of “Working Memory in Language Sciences and Bilingualism Research: Towards an Integrated Account and a Taxonomy”. 

Wen Zhisheng (Edward), doctor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, is an associate professor at the School of Linguistics and Translation, Macao Polytechnic Institute. His research interests include second language acquisition (SLA) and cognitive psychology, task-based teaching, genre analysis and business translation. His recent research focuses on the theoretical and practical research on individual differences in SLA, such as linguistic competence and working memory. He has published more than 50 papers in important academic journals at home and abroad, guest edited a special issue of international academic journals, and published a number of English monographs.

From five backgrounds, Professor Wen first pointed out the importance and necessity of research on working memory, then from the evolution of the concept, the theoretical framework (a taxonomy of working memory in first and second language), relevant empirical research, and implications of L2 research and practice, he has carried on the deep discussion on working memory. Finally, some suggestions on the future research direction of working memory are given. Professor Wen's lecture, with clear logic and strong pertinence, lasted more than two hours. Participants actively communicated with Professor Wen. His rich and valuable research experience benefited participants a lot and helped them have a clearer understanding of working memory.
